Still Life with Pink Background, 1976

Jan van Tongeren (1897-1991) worked in a realistic style for most of his life. His later works distinguish themselves from the earlier ones through the minimalization of the rendering of texture. Forms and colours assumed an increasingly prominent role. In Still Life with Pink Background, for exampl ... e, two main colours were used for the objects displayed: blue and green. All other shades were mixed on the basis of these hues: notice the shades of blue and green of the chair, the cloth, the brush, and the tablecloths. The other objects are white, grey, or black. The pink background forms a link with the shades of blue and green in the still life. To visually draw the objects even closer together, Van Tongeren added a white detail to all the objects. He called this ‘making things like family.’ Van Tongeren gradually began painting in a less photorealistic manner. Text: Myrthe Wesseling, guide and museum host
