Eppur si muove, 1960

A postcard from the Dolomites and a newspaper cutting from 1917 with a photograph of ruins following the Battle of Ypres inspired Carel Willink (1900-1983) to paint Eppur si muove. The title refers to a phrase about the earth attributed to Galileo Galilei (1564-1642): ‘And yet it moves’. This reno ... wned Italian scientist is often referred to as the father of modern astronomy. Galilei drew the ire of the church thanks to his notion that the earth revolves around the sun, and not vice versa, as was the popular belief at the time.
