Carel Willink

Portrait of Mathilde, 1975

Carel Willink here portrayed his eccentric third wife Mathilde wearing an extravagant outfit by the fashion designer Fong Leng. This gold satin gown with leopard and peacock embroidery and shoulder and upper arm decorations presented a real challenge for the painter. Shiny fabric can only be rendere ... d convincingly by its reflections, as is the case here. Willink painted wet-on-wet layers with oil paint pigments he ground himself. He used the brick-red veined marble and the blue Amsterdam sky to tone down the golden sheen. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
