Carel Willink

Self-Portrait, 1920

As a 20-year-old art student, Carel Willink painted himself while making this portrait. We look down on him from above, indicating that he has hung the mirror up high. The painter is sitting in his tiny student room, humbly propped between the chest of drawers and the bed. Deliberately opened drawer ... s and the diagonally positioned bedside table add natural geometry to the crowded composition. Willink experimented with watercolours to capture the unassuming scene, using green, blue and red as graphic colour accents. He would go on to paint more self-portraits.
