The Silver Wedding, 1924

In the early 20th century, various art styles jostled for position in response to one another. This could be confusing, but also a fine challenge, like for the young Carel Willink. From 1920 to 1923, he took private art schooling in vibrant Berlin. Back home, he made this montage of a marriage celeb ... ration, inspired by family photographs. We see a collection of image fragments, which Willink presents in folding perspectives. His father’s amateur painting shines at the centre of the artwork. Willink continued to use the montage technique, albeit toned down. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
