Carel Willink

The Zeppelin, 1933

That was quite something! On 14 October 1929, a German Zeppelin whirred over Amsterdam. Four years later, Carel Willink painted this scene – hence this is largely true to life. Four similarly dressed gentlemen stand on the corner of the Stadhouderskade/P.C. Hooftstraat, close to the Rijksmuseum. Bol ... d shadows and reflections – the buildings in the puddles, the clouds in the windows – lend the scene a filmic quality.
