Charlotte van Pallandt

Acrobat, 1939

Bodily forms, surfaces and structures fascinated sculptor Charlotte van Pallandt throughout her long life as an artist. Her Figurative oeuvre features the usual portrait busts of friends and strangers. She carved this acrobat with frizzy hair from granite, an adamantine variety of stone : first wit ... h a rough, raw action, becoming more delicate and detailed. In contrast to her older, later models with features marked by age, the expression of this powerful performer is determined by his muscly neck, which has almost the same girth as his head.
