Victoria in Scene (from the series Grief), 2007

A young woman in a diffusely lit hotel room turns her 1960s coiffed head briefly to the left. We see her just before something very important is about to happen – as in the scenes painted by Johannes Vermeer. With his deliberately artificial photograph, Erwin Olaf is referencing a picture of a const ... ructed key scene from a movie. Olaf consciously drew inspiration for these portraits from pastel-coloured, melodramatic feature films by Douglas Sirk in particular, who himself was looking at genre painting.
