Hubert van Hille

Self-portrait, 1934 - 1935

In this white, schematically painted jacket, Hubert van Hille resembles an indifferent barber. A yellow store curtain tempers the afternoon sun that shines in through the window. Into the light, Van Hille paints himself using a wide brush. The orange-red, sunlit ear is a real treat. In the top left, ... we see a geometric architectural detail. In the top right, the brown of his tie returns. Alphons Freijmuth and Reinier Lucassen, painters from the Belgian-Dutch New Figurative movement (1960-80), were so taken with Van Hille’s simplified realism that they collected his works. Long-term loan from the Cultural Heritage Agency.
