Jan Beutener

Coming from the Right, 1995 - 1996

As a set designer, Jan Beutener created imaginary worlds on stage. Here too: the eye-catching plank fence looks like a fire screen. Leaning against it, left of centre, is an overexposed pink door – without an opening behind it. Sunlight casts a diagonal shadow. Because we read from left to right and ... also look this way ... we are unconsciously startled by the surface sliding into our field of vision from the right. We don’t really know what Beutener wants us to look at first. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
