Jan Bor

Self-Portrait in Yellow Jacket, 1940

Violinist Jan Bor was a largely self-taught painter. This charming self-portrait gives away the fact that he briefly had lessons from Charley Toorop, as reflected in the exaggerated stylisation with the large eyes and high forehead. This makes the self-portrait expressive and even ruthless. The meas ... ured areas appear to be influenced by Cubism. Bor kept the colour scheme simple: a pink skin with greyish shadows, instead of colour contrasts and striking highlights. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
