Mouth Open, 2001

The lips of this nude reclining child are parted. This is unsettling because the adult world interprets an open mouth as a signal of sexual seduction. However, the painter, Kiki Lamers, also happens to be the youngster’s mother. She photographs her children at various – thus also intimate – moments. ... These personal photographs form the starting point for anonymous oil portraits. Lamers usually paints her models in sheer pink or blue tones on a matte grey background with a mixture of aluminium pigment. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
