Matthijs Röling (1943) made his name as an artist and teacher at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He himself trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His phenomenal technical skill was praised early on. Röling practised various genres over the years, pain
...ting still lifes, nudes, landscapes, and interiors.
He lives in Ezinge, Groningen, on a large estate which he transformed into his own ‘paradise.’ Röling: ‘Harmony is the key concept. Human creations must be in harmony with nature.’ During the last years of his professional life, he mainly painted his garden from different perspectives and in different seasons: this must be summer, with (withered) poppies.
