Matthijs Röling

Tracker, 2005

Summers outside. In his intimate Groningen studio-home, Matthijs Röling paints intuitively and figuratively, never academically or conceptually. Here Röling hesitantly yet eloquently depicted a bare sunbather on his garden path from a high vantage point – perhaps a stoop? The sun itself is not in th ... e picture plane, which is why Röling used cool, subdued tones for the figure’s backlit back. However, where the sunlight generously ricochets off the shoulders, arms and thighs, the colours are a jubilant bright pink-orange and yellow.
