Philip Akkerman

Self-portrait, 1986 (no. 35), 1986

A self-portrait is rarely created out of vanity, but more often out of convenience. After all, with a mirror, the painter always has an available model. Philip Akkerman has made nothing but self-portraits since 1981, which he has thereby elevated into a form of conceptual art. While Akkerman paints ... his own face over and over, he always does so in different styles and techniques. Here the contrasting wild reddish purple and earth green colours of the tensely concentrated face reference early 20th-century Fauvism.
