The Signal, 1975

Pyke Koch was quoting himself here. He reused a 45-year-earlier style and theme in his in the meantime perfected painting technique. The heavily made-up woman looking away resembles Mercedes of Barcelona and the film star Asta Nielsen, models in his earlier paintings. A streetwalker, she waits at a ... public urinal which is also a meeting point. Barely visible, she spreads her fingers in a scabrous gesture, a signal that (only) the elderly painter remembered with a snigger from his wild youth.
