Pyke Koch

Woman with a Gramophone, 1928

Pyke Koch debuted at an exhibition organised by Amsterdam artists society De Onafhankelijken (‘The Independents’), with works including this enigmatic, brown-grey and white composition of a gramophone almost completely obscuring a woman. There was no way of controlling the volume, so it was best no ... t to stand right next to the horn. René Magritte made his own surrealistic scene with just this type of gramophone, slightly earlier than Koch. Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
