Raoul Hynckes

Genealogy (Helmet), 1939

‘Never ramshackle. Flawless understanding of composition’. This is how confrère Pyke Koch praised Hynckes’ still lifes. The theatrical lighting in the background is striking, suggesting drama nearby. To the front, a second light source illuminates part of the perfectly rendered helmet. With this cla ... ssic light-dark still life, Hynckes honours his 17th-century predecessors. He felt a genealogical connection to them, as a descendent. Hynckes was not looking to copy their style, but rather to measure his ability with theirs.
