Raoul Hynckes

Still Life with Mandolin, 1927

Hynckes’ numerous still lifes allow us to closely follow his stylistic development. With its bold stylisation and smooth surfaces, this early work shows Cubist influences. Hynckes usually kept the symbolism of the objects in his still lifes to himself. He was inspired by other still life painters, p ... ast and present. However, in his autobiography, Hynckes did mention that the ace of spades symbolises impossible love. The question remains of whether the apple cut in two and the mandolin have erotic connotations.
