Theo L'Herminez

Woman in an Interior, 1974

At one time an advertising painter, L’Herminez did not like realistic renderings. He made highly stylized portraits of women based on brief encounters. This self-absorbed woman with closed eyes avoids all contact. Her voluptuous nudity is anything but erotic: her skin is unnaturally blue, like the c ... urtains and the carpet. The chilly composition makes a severe impression because of the classical, central perspective with the vanishing point exactly on her breastbone. Does the golden yellow plane at the upper centre symbolize an unapproachable, celestial ideal of beauty? Text: Chris Reinewald From: Museum MORE: 100 jaar realisme, 2020, Gorssel
