Willem Anthonie (Wim) Oepts

Canal, 1932

Wim Oepts found fame and adoration with his colourful, somewhat abstract landscapes. He started making these works circa 1940. But now behold this pitch-dark painting of a canal shrouded in evening mist. Here and there, geometric areas of colour emerge from the darkness. We look towards the moored b ... arge over the shoulder of a woman wearing a bowler hat, and perhaps feel like characters in the film noir Le Quai des Brumes (‘Port of Shadows’), which was released six years later.
