Willem (Wim) Bosma

Haven, 1930

A painter of industrial subjects, Wim Bosma brings great flair to this depiction of a ship unloading at port, using geometric planes, horizontals and verticals. We see as much of the white ship as is hidden from view. The grey shadow of the port crane, perfectly diagonal, dissects the composition. T ... he limited use of colour resonates more of graphics than of painting. While it’s hard to compare the two, with his precise, clinical style, the self-taught Bosma holds his own against his American contemporary Charles Sheeler.
