Fountain in Corte, Corsica, 1928

If you ever find yourself in the Corsican mountain town of Corte, don’t miss this picturesque square with its Fountain of the Four Cannons (1778). And yet ‘picturesque’ is perhaps not the word you’d choose to describe Wim Schuhmacher’s grey and angular depiction of this cityscape. A sloping wall of ... houses overshadows the coarse fountain. Up above, the shining sun coaxes pale yellow tones from the houses and emphasises the light green of the summery trees. Schuhmacher, the ‘Master of Grey’ , indulged little fantasy when capturing this vacant square. And why should he? It’s perfect as it is.
