Still Life with Fish and Fruit, 1931

A still life is like preparing a recipe. In this case, it’s also a painting exercise in structure and form. A succulent salmon and two red gurnards are draped on a muted, light plate. The tumbler glimmers, as does the salmon. Somewhat more expressive is the contrast between the scales of the red gur ... nards and the dark green globe artichoke. This freakish vegetable often shows up in the still lifes of Giorgio De Chirico, a shining light for many Realist painters in the 1920s and 1930s.
