Woman Sitting by the Window, 1928

Revealing details betray the period in which this painting was made: circa 1930, when New Objectivity was emerging in art and architecture. The rather grave model has a bob haircut and wears silk stockings. She sits to the right of the scene, the streetscape through the window forming a natural back ... ground. The painter has included two disproportionately small parked cars, creating additional distance between inside and outside: the Raphaelstraat in the new, still somewhat impersonal neighbourhood of Amsterdam Nieuw-Zuid.
